Smartphones and tablets have scored unprecedented popularity in recent years. eMarketer estimates that smartphone users worldwide will reach 1.75 billion in 2014. And this number is expected to swell to 2.5 billion—comprising approximately one third of the world’s population by 2017.

Similar global statistics indicate that 50% of all mobile phone users use mobile as their primary Internet source, 80% of mobile time is spent inside apps, and 72% of tablet owners make online purchases from their tablets each week. There’s no question that mobile devices are becoming more mainstream, to say the least, but who exactly is using them these days?

Check out our cool infographic for a detailed analysis of the whos, hows, and whys of technology adoption within the nuclear family tree.

As it turns out, today’s families have discovered that mobile technology is often as useful in the hands of a toddler as it is in those of an adult. Nearly a third of all parents feel that smartphones and tablets can make parenting easier. And for most, there seems to be no family conflict involved in children’s use of mobile technology. These trends imply that despite the newness of devices and methods, parents are typically in agreement about the best way to introduce tablets and smartphones to the youngest generation.

And, of course, introductions are only the beginning. With games and educational apps so widely available, tablets have become a powerful tool for calming and distracting unruly children. Seventeen percent of parents, in fact, regularly use a mobile device as a modern-day pacifier.

As for the adolescent users, while this generation is eager to adopt new technologies, it isn’t always as easy as they’d like. Most teens are more than open to the idea of using the latest mobile inventions, but financial considerations often hold them back. It’s consumers in their late 20s and early 30s who are perfectly positioned to make the most of the latest developments on the market. Members of this generation are generally fearless when it comes to using new devices, and their pockets are usually deep enough to indulge in new technologies.

So, as more and more parents adopt mobile technologies like smartphones and tablets, we can expect to see a growing number of children who are exposed to these devices in their wake. For better or for worse, today’s brave new world has become an adventurous mobile playground for kids, filled to capacity with exciting apps, games, and infinite opportunities for entertainment and learning.
